Are you Listening ... to Old Time Radio?

I have a dirty little secret: I am a fun, adventure seeking 30 year old (and no, this isn't going to be a 'personals ad'.) But while my friends sit in bars and drink on Sunday nights, I stay home and listen to Old Time Radio Shows.

I found them quite by accident. I love listening to NPR on Sundays but normally turn the radio off to spend time with my hubbie in the evenings (I know it's hard to believe but he can't stand Pubic Radio.) One night, however, he was out with some friends and I kept the radio playing. To my delight, a fantastic DJ named Ed Walker came on the air for his show, The Big Broadcast. For the next four hours, I was entertained with radio dramas from the 30's, 40's and 50's ... and I've been listening ever since.

What I love so much about the shows is the opportunity I have to use my imagination while I listen. What does Johnny Dollar look like? What did the monsters look like in "War of the Words"? Believe me, the aliens I imagined looked a LOT scarier then the ones in Tom Cruise's film.

The humor is cleaner, the jokes are sweeter and the plots are a lot more interesting. The talent on the shows is real and raw - TV stars are praised because of their image; on radio, stars made it because of their talent. They had to make their audience feel, imagine, understand what was going on ... based on their vocal talent alone. Now that's good acting.

Radio shows build on one of my favorite pasttimes, reading, and it's because of the common factor that connects them together: imagination!

I don't want someone to show me everything and do all the thinking for me. I want to come to my own conclusions and draw my own pictures, make my own images and create my own landscapes.
